frequently asked questions

Where should we take our pictures?

We take your pictures anywhere that you are interested in.  Timeless looks might include a nature setting or in a field.  For a modern edge, you might enjoy the alleyways in the old downtown or near buildings with interesting architecture or textures.  Please contact us for suggestions if you need them.

What time of day should we take our pictures?

Evenings are the best because the lighting is soft and indirect.  Mornings can work as well.  Midday and early afternoon creates harsh shadows on the face and should be avoided unless cloudy, or we can work in full shade.  Indoor shots are best done during the middle of the day when the light is brightest.

What should we wear?

You should decide what mood you want to display in your images.  If you like a relaxed look, wear your everyday clothing.  If you’re going for a more formal portrait, a dressier outfit may be appropriate. We encourage you to wear something you can move in and feel comfortable.  This is especially important for children!  If you’re worried about them dirtying their clothing, or if they are uncomfortable, the last thing they will want to do is pose for a photo.  Also, please avoid white and light gray unless you have very dark colored skin.  Otherwise it has a tendency to wash out your skin coloring.

Do we have to match?

Only if you want to.

What props should I bring?

If you have a prop or something of interest you would like to include in your photographs, you are more than welcome to bring it.  If your child has a lovey or toy that may calm him or help her relax (that you don’t mind having in the pictures) then it is welcome.  We would also suggest bringing a small snack or treat for children to keep them happy and reward big smiles!

What do I do if my child won't behave?

The best thing to do is to keep your cool.  Your child can sense when you’re feeling uptight.  We can take time out to comfort a crying child or simply take a moment to walk around.  Don’t forget a water and small snacks to keep the grumpies away for small children. Our goal is to get wonderful photographs and  the best way to do that is to have our subjects relaxed and happy.

What can I expect my session to be like?

We’ll jump right in!  We go fast to get as many images done as quickly as possible before children get unruly and the adults get sick of smiling.  Most families (ahem, husbands) say it is much more painless than they planned.  Payment is due at the time of service.

What happens after we're done?

Immediately after we’re done, we’ll schedule a time for your private gallery viewing.  The gallery viewing will be your chance to see the images from your session and have a professional’s help making decisions on which art will be best in your home.  You will choose which poses you would like to print, then we get to work.  You will receive your images in 2-3 weeks from your order date.

Prints or Digitals?

A cared for image will last a lifetime. They take the investment you made in our art and puts it on your wall for your daily viewing pleasure. We offer archival quality prints, professional canvases, and individually designed albums for reasonable prices. Every image will be color matched exactly to our digital image to guarantee you have nothing but the best.

But we also know that in today’s digital age, digital copies are a necessity for social media, Christmas cards, and that copy your forgot to order for Great Aunt Shirley! For every print you order, you also receive a digital copy. For all orders over a certain amount, you will receive unedited digital copies of your entire session.

What do I need to know about my CD?

First, make a copy!  We only keep sessions on the hard drive for a year.  After they are deleted, they may remain on my backup server for a few months, but there are no guarantees.  Second, all images are ready to be printed at the size your ordered your prints.  Please do not try and make them larger as the quality will immediately become severely compromised.

What does ``model release`` and ``print release`` mean?

They mean, as the artists, we hold copyright and all other rights pertaining to the images we created.  But we definitely want to you to be able to use your images as you see fit.  So the print release allows you to print to your hearts content.  The model release allows us to use your images in future endeavors.  Rest assured we would never use your image in conjunction with anything criminal or unseemly, but we do retain rights to use your images for advertising, stock photography, exhibition, contests, and any other way we deem useful.  If you have concerns about your images being shown either online or as a hard copy, please let us know.  Otherwise, be flattered that you’re so cute we couldn’t help but share!

What if I have to cancel?

Life happens, we understand that and definitely don’t want you to loose the full session fee!  Instead, we collect a $25 nonrefundable deposit to retain your desired date.   If things don’t work out the way you planned, please to let us know as soon as possible.

Do you offer retakes?

We give you free retakes in the event that there is a technical error on the photographer’s part.  All other retakes are subject to a full session fee.
