For our final installment of #whatthewednesday theater photos, let's talk about another more advanced setting that will make a huge different.

Don't freak out- this isn't rocket science, but it is a little more complicated than press the shutter and go. Today we're going to talk about the focus point. Often your camera is set to auto select the AF point, but you can change the settings to be able to control the little dot and move it to where you want to focus. On a phone, this is as simple as tapping on the screen on the place you want to focus. In other cameras, check your menu settings. This allows you to make sure your focus on your preferred object. For example, this small theater with low ceilings does not allow me the necessary angle to get the full stage without also getting lights or audience as well. I definitely don't want an audience member's head in focus while Shrek is not! By putting my AF point on whomever I'm focusing on, I guarantee that's where the lens will focus. If you forget to move it, though, all of your photos will be out of focus, so practice this skill ahead of your important event!

Having completed college after I started my family always makes me cheer a little harder when other nontraditional students are able to go back to school. It's so incredibly meaningful and you KNOW that worked that much harder to finish. Congratulations Ray!

More theater photography tips! Did you think I was done? Well I still have plays to share so I might as well keep helping you while I do!

Choose your lens carefully. For theater photography, usually a good zoom works best. Every theater I've taken photos in requires a different set up of which lens I use and where I sit (when I get a choice). Ideally your lens can zoom out to catch the entire stage and also zoom in the catch the emotion on a characters face.  I can't tell you a specific because in this theater I was working between 50 and 85 mm from the back, but in the Frontier Center I'm working more like 200-400 mm, so it's entirely dependent on the circumstance. 

If you don't have your choice of gear, no big deal. You decide what's most important to catch (such as your cutest little dancer), and sit where your lens will best capture exactly what you want to remember.

More theater photography tips!

Theater lighting changes quickly and drastically. Every theater has their own lighting quirks and things that work well and things that . . . don't. For example, some areas of this stage were very hot (over bright) and some were so dark the camera could barely pick anything up. This means unless you're on auto, you will need to be constantly checking to make sure you're not severely over or underexposing your images (too dark or too bright). If you're in auto, you can skip ahead (just make sure that flash is turned off!!!),

If you're not in auto, shutter priority would be my suggestion for those not ready to go full manual. You set the shutter speed at least 200 or higher if hand held. You can go down a little with a tripod, but because the actors move, anything under 150 tends to have blurry arm and leg movements.
